She was unable to take it any longer. She was persuaded that she could no longer persevere through the nearness of that derisive drifter. She was resolved to end it, end everything, regardless of how terrible it may be, instead of bear his oppression. Â Â Â Â Â It had about been fifteen days with that battle. What she didn't comprehend was the resilience that Antonio had with that drifter. No, honestly, it was odd. Â Â Â Â Â The drifter asked for accommodation for one night: the evening of Ash Wednesday precisely, when the breeze hauled along a blackish residue, spinning, and whipped the glass windows with a dry snap. A while later, the breeze stopped, and there happened to an abnormal quiet to the earth, and she considered, while shutting and altering the window blinds. Â â â â â - - I don't care for this quiet - Â Â Â Â Â She hadn't bolted the secondary passage when that man showed up. She heard his call ringing from behind the entryway in the kitchen: Â â â â â - - Kind lady...- - Â Â Â Â Â Mariana felt abrupt dread. The man, old and raggedy, was there; a cap in one hand, with an asking way. Â â â â â - - Shall God ensure you...- - he began to state. In any case, the drifter's eyes viewed her in an abnormal manner. A way that denied her of words. Â Â Â Â Â Many men like him asked for the finesse of paradise on winter evenings. Be that as it may, something about that man alarmed her without rationale. Â Â Â Â Â The drifter started to discuss his ditty: For one night, in the event that they would sympathetically let him rest in a stable; a bit of bread and a steady; he doesn't request more. Â Â Â Â Â The storm declared its coming... Â Â Â Â Â Outside, Mariana heard the drumming of the downpour against the entryway. A hard of hearing precipitation, thick, an admonition of the moving toward storm. Â Â Â Â Â I'm alone- - she said dryly- - . I mean...when my significant other is away, I don't need obscure individuals in my home. Go, and may God secure you. Â Â Â Â Â But the drifter stayed as yet, taking a gander at her. Gradually, he put his cap on and stated: - I'm a poor man, kind woman. I never did any wrong to anybody. I ask next to no: a bit of bread... Â Â Â Â Â In that second, two house cleaners, Marcelina and Salome, came running in. They originated from the vegetable nursery, with their covers over their heads, shouting and snickering. Mariana felt a peculiar alleviation in the wake of seeing them. Â Â Â Â Â Well- - she said- - . Fine... be that as it may, just during the current night. For tomorrow when I conscious, I don't discover you here.... Â Â Â Â Â The elderly person stooped, grinning, and said a bizarre sonnet of much appreciated. Â Â Â Â Â Mariana rose the steps and went to hit the hay.

Astronomy and other Space Sciences (Essay Sample) Content: Surname Tutor Course DateMohamed HWChapter 1: 2. The solar system comprises of the sun, the planets and their satellites, asteroids coupled with various gases and dust that exist within interplanetary space, as well as, comets and asteroids. On the other hand, the galaxy has billions of stars, and the solar system. It also contains gases and dust particles within the interplanetary space, and clouds, as well. 3. Light years is recommended as a measures of the distance between stars because they are separated by light years that range from few light years to thousands of light years 4. The planets that orbit other stars appear dim hence they are not easy to observe. In addition, they appear to have smaller sizes when compared to the stars, which they orbit around. 5. When photographs of stars are seen through a telescope, they look much bigger in size and brighter, as compared to when they are observed through a camera. The best explanation is that the stars will look as if they have bigger diameters on a photographic image than the stars because their intensity of brightness diminishes, irrespective of their relative sizes. 6. The Milky Way basically refers to a light band that is seen above the sky and this also incorporated with the light that is illuminated from many stars that are in the Milky Galaxy. On the other hand, the Milky Way galaxy refers to what is observed in the sky at night that comprises of the light that originates from the sun. 7. Filaments are the largest known structures in the universe. These are large strings of super clusters of several galaxies. Chapter 2: 4. People from different cultures view the images that are in the sky based on their values and perceptions. However, it is possible that they could observe the same constellations as a result of the definitions that they accord the things that they observe in the sky. The other difference that can be observed is that asterism depends on different cultural backgr ounds. Due to this, the appearance of stars in the sky may not show similar patterns because people from different cultures observe them at different geographical locations. 5. The stars up in the sky are accorded different constellations as designated by Greek letters; therefore, this demonstrates brightness of the stars as they are observed at night. In addition, the Greek letter designation is only functions in an alphabetical order and this range from bright to faint. This means that the Greek letter designation cannot be relied on in order to make comparisons of how bright or faint the stars appear in the sky. 6. In a logarithm scale, there are different aspects of brightness, which is a magnitude system. This demonstrates how the stars in the sky appear and how the human eye responds to the brightness of the stars. In addition, the human eye adapts and guides how the magnitude system operates. As a result, due to the response of the human eye, it is able to detect the brightne ss of the stars and this adaptation allows the human eye to observe different ranges of the brightness of stars; hence this magnitude system is derived through classifying the stars according to how bright or faint they appear at night. For instance, the stars that appear faint have larger numerical magnitude when compared to the stars that appear brighter, that have smaller magnitude values.9. When referring to angular distance between celestial objects, the word on is used instead of in because at an indeterminable distance, the objects appear in a celestial sphere. My Hero Martin Luther King - Free Essay Example

My Hero: Martin Luther King Inspirational, religious, oratory, patience, a martyr and a leader are words that describe my hero, Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King is highly recognized and remembered, not only by African Americans, but by all ethnicities. Although he is dead, he continues to linger in our hearts and minds. Even at school and in communities, he still lives on through the projects that are done about him; the celebrations in February; the holiday in his honor; and several streets and buildings that are named in his honor. In his struggle for equality and justice, he encountered many obstacles, but was still able to lead a successful Civil Rights Movement. While fighting for the cause of making a better life for humans, predominantly African Americans, he lost his life on April 4th, 1968 when he was assassinated. His efforts to help mankind, is quite heroic and that’s why I call him my hero. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929. Initially, his name was Michael L. King, which he changed to the renown, Martin Luther king. He married, the love of his life, Coretta Scott King in 1953 while he was studying. This union brought them three children. He received his education at Moorehouse College, where he graduated at the tender age of 15 years, which is quite impressive. He also received his Ph. D at Boston Graduate Schools. Following in the footsteps of his father, Dr. King also became a minister of the gospel. In his early life, just like any other kid, he liked to fly kites, ride his bike and play baseball and football. He was also a paper boy. His mom taught him to read before he went to school. Sadly though, he could not play with the white kids because of his color and this was the driving behind his struggle to end racism and foster freedom, liberty, equality, and justice. In the 1960s, King fought as a Civil Rights Activist against discrimination and segregation, in a time when segregation laws, like the Jim Crow Laws were present. These laws separated blacks from whites, meaning that blacks and whites ate in different restaurants, use different drinking fountains and bathrooms, attending different churches for praying. In many instances African Americans were cursed, chased, lynched and killed, just because of the color of their skin. To get people to listen to his cause, King started a boycott of the buses by the black people in 1953. As a result, people tried to bomb his house in 1956, and in 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. was convicted of leading a march in Albany. Despite the struggles, King accomplished a lot. He was the president of the Montgomery Improvement Association. He wrote the, â€Å"I Have a Dream Speech†, which was quite powerful. In 1958, he published a book called Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story. He also became the co-pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, his father’s old church, and moreover, he was a great civil rights leader. His persona in all these struggles was very calm for he believed in Gandhi, who said that love, not violence, was the most powerful weapon. Therefore, Martin Luther King is my hero because of his strength and determination to fight for a worthy cause. The fact the he was able rise above the challenges before him to help African Americans gain their rights in peaceful, non-violent means are great characteristics.

Marie Curie Quotes Wise Words About Science and Life

With her husband, Pierre, Marie Curie was the pioneer in researching radioactivity. When he died suddenly, she refused a government pension and instead took his place as a professor at the University of Paris. She was awarded a Nobel Prize for her work, then became the first person to win a second Nobel Prize, and she is the only Nobel Prize winner who is also the mother of another Nobel Prize winner—Irà ¨ne Joliot-Curie,  daughter of Marie Curie and Pierre Curie. Selected Marie Curie Quotations I never see what has been done; I only see what remains to be done. Another version:  One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done. Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. We must not forget that when radium was discovered no one knew that it would prove useful in hospitals. The work was one of pure science. And this is a proof that scientific work must not be considered from the point of view of the direct usefulness of it. It must be done for itself, for the beauty of science, and then there is always the chance that a scientific discovery may become like the radium a benefit for humanity. I am among those who think that science has great beauty. A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician: he is also a child placed before natural phenomena which impress him like a fairy tale. A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales. You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for his own improvement, and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful. Humanity needs practical men, who get the most out of their work, and, without forgetting the general good, safeguard their own interests. But humanity also needs dreamers, for whom the disinterested development of an enterprise is so captivating that it becomes impossible for them to devote their care to their own material profit. Without doubt, these dreamers do not deserve wealth, because they do not desire it. Even so, a well-organized society should assure to such workers the efficient means of accomplishing their task, in a life freed from material care and freely consecrated to research. I have frequently been questioned, especially by women, of how I could reconcile family life with a scientific career. Well, it has not been easy. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained. I was taught that the way of progress is neither swift nor easy. Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained. Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas. I am one of those who think like Nobel, that humanity will draw more good than evil from new discoveries. There are sadistic scientists who hurry to hunt down errors instead of establishing the truth. When one studies strongly radioactive substances special precautions must be taken. Dust, the air of the room, and ones clothes, all become radioactive. After all, science is essentially international, and it is only through lack of the historical sense that national qualities have been attributed to it. I have no dress except the one I wear every day. If you are going to be kind enough to give me one, please let it be practical and dark so that I can put it on afterwards to go to the laboratory. (about a wedding dress) Quotes About Marie Curie Albert Einstein: Marie Curie is, of all celebrated beings, the only one whom fame has not corrupted. Irene Joliet-Curie: That one must do some work seriously and must be independent and not merely amuse oneself in life—this our mother has told us always, but never that science was the only career worth following.

Business Law Civil Act

Question: Describe about the Business Law for Civil Act. Answer: According to section 5L of Civil Liability Act 2002 accused is not liable for any harm suffered from risk which is obvious in nature and arise in any dangerous recreational activity. In this section, the defendant is not held liable for the negligence which cause harm to the plaintiff, if such harm was caused because of the risk which is obvious in nature and arise from the dangerous recreational activity in which plaintiff is engaged at his own will. This section was applied on the plaintiff in the case if plaintiff is not aware of the risk[1]. Section 5M of Civil Liability Act 2002 states that accused is not liable for harm caused to the plaintiff and he not own duty of care towards the plaintiff, if plaintiff engages in the dangerous recreational activity at his own will, and risk related to that activity was already conveyed to the plaintiff through warning. For the purpose of this section a risk warning is a warning which is given in that manner, which is suitable for warn the public in general way regarding the risk related to recreational activity. Defendant is not responsible whether person understands the warning or not[2]. According to section 5R which state the provision related to contribution of negligence. This Section determines the contribution of plaintiff in negligence of risk. In this court determine whether the person who got injured is equally negligent in taking precautions related to risk which is associated with the activity and cause harm to the plaintiff. For the applicability of this section court consider two factors: Whether plaintiff is in that position in which he avoid injury and take precautions. Court also determines how much plaintiff knew at that time[3]. For the applicability of the above sections it is beneficial that we discuss the meaning of dangerous recreational activity. According to Section 5K of Civil Liability Act 2002, dangerous recreational activity means any recreational activity which includes risk of physical injury. Recreational activity includes the following activities: It includes any kind of sport activity, whether or not that sport activity is organized. Any activity which is related to enjoyment, relaxation or leisure. Any activity which is done at places such as beaches, parks or any other places, in which public generally engage in sport or any other activity which relates to enjoyment, relaxation or leisure[4]. In this case Mid Winter Show organizers at Paynesville organize a chair-o-lift ride for the show which was happened in weekend. They arrange this ride for the second time, because they already arrange this ride in show happened in previous year. Billy and Meg attend the show and decide to enjoy the ride. They both purchased tickets for this ride from the ticket window. Attendant forgets to tell them that the conditions related to ride are mention in the ticket, but they both signed the conditions mention on the ticket. Billy and Meg notice that something was written on the ticket but did not read that writing, and sign the ticket without reading it. They both assume that this was mere entry ticket. Notice contains terms and conditions were stick on the central pylon in the middle of the ride. The notice which contain terms and conditions for right was faded, and terms and conditions mentioned on it was not shown properly. When Billy was getting off from the ride he fell, and he suffered hand and arm fractures. His teeth were also cracked. Billy wants to sue the organizers for damages. Organizers argue that clause was mentioned on the back of the ticket which states that person enjoy the ride at his own risk. The owners are not responsible for any physical harm caused to person because of the ride. In present case, the main issue was whether or not organizers are liable towards the Billy, who got physical injury at the time when he gets off the ride. In this case, section 5M, 5L and 5R of Civil Liability Act 2002 are applicable and organizers are not liable towards the Billy and do not own any duty of care. It was clearly mention that Billy and Meg both sign the tickets in which all the terms and warning consider the ride was mention, but they did not read the warnings and conditions and sign the ticket. It was also mention that Billy attends this show for the second time, and he already attended the same show organized in the previous year. In this section 5M was applied which states that if risk was conveyed to the plaintiff then defendant is not liable towards the plaintiff and in this risk was conveyed to the Billy through ticket which he signed. The second fact was Billy engages in dangerous recreational activity at his own will and according to section 5L of Civil Liability Act 2002 accused is not liable towards the plaintiff regarding risk which is associated in any dangerous recreational activity, and in this case Billy is entered into dangerous recreational activity. In this one more section that is Section 5R is also applicable which determine the contribution of plaintiff in the negligence, and in the present case Billy was second time attended the show and he was aware from the risk associated with it. Billy also sign the tickets in which all the terms and warning which convey the risk associated with the ride was mentioned but he sign the ticket without reading those warnings. Therefore in this case we clearly conclude that Section 5M, 5L and 5R of Civil Liability Act 200 was applicable, and organizers of Mid Winter Show were not liable for any damages towards Billy. According to an article published in Dagens Nyheter, this is together with the growing population and poor weather the greatest reason for the increasing food prices. [pic] The size of the population is one of the factors affecting the demand, which is defined as the quantity of a good or a service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at a given price in a given time period. As the population of the world grows, so does the demand for food. Given that the price is raised it will become more favourable for producers to increase their supply, referring to the Law of Supply which states that â€Å"as the price of a product rises, the quantity supplied of the product will usually increase, ceteris paribus (all other things being equal)†. If the producers are able to increase their supply, the prices might decrease as Lennart Bage, President of the United Nations Fund for Agriculture Development (ISAD) states: â€Å"the prices might drop slightly when the access is rising due to demand†. We will write a custom essay sample on Personal Commentary or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page pic] With the opportunity of making a greater profit when supplying, many producers would probably like to increase their production as the prices on the market rises. This would move the supply curve to the right, from S to S1, lowering the price from P1 to P and thus reaching a new equilibrium at price P and quantity Q2, as seen in the diagram above. But due to poor weather and other factors affecting the agriculture, it might be hard to raise the supply. The use of transgenic or artificial fertilizer may simplify and increase the production, but considering our western world’s negative opinion towards these kinds of accommodations, it might be hard to carry out and to make profits. [pic] Another way of reducing the prices might be price controls. Often when it deals with basic food commodities, the government might interfere by setting a maximum price which is below the equilibrium price and prevents producers from raising the price above it. This will enable the poor to afford the food, but due to the change in price, the demand will shift to the right along the curve. As seen in the diagram above, there will now be an excess demand at price PMax, as the quantity supplied is Q while the quantity demanded is Q2. This excess is most appropriately solved by increasing the supply, shifting the supply curve to the right from S to S1, which is blue and crosshatched on the diagram in order to make it easier to imagine the situation without the S1 curve. Now a new equilibrium is reached at Pmax and Q2. Increasing the supply can be done by the government in several ways, for instance by offering subsidies to firms and industries producing the product, giving them an opportunity to increase their production. But according to Lennart Bage, many countries’ interest in subsidising agriculture has decreased the last 10-15 years and therefore the importance in increasing the supply must be clearly spread and understood. Even though our environment is of greatest importance, our living conditions are so too.

Every child in his family was a little rebellious. So when they had him they decided that they have had enough ( Brunett, Pgs 60-61). As a kid Jamie raised himself in a sense. His mom taught him a lot of things but most of the things he had to learn on his own. He Probably had to learn a lot more things on his own than the average child. When Jamie was growing up he was probably the best skater in his town, since there wasnt a lot of skaters in Alabama. Jamie lived in Alabama for a long time. Jamie got a lot of attention as a kid because he was a skateboard kid ( Brunett, Pgs 62-63). When Jamie was young he did all the basics to fit in: the Mohawk, the shaved head, the bleached hair and whatever else was necessary. When Jamie was growing up the kids that were older were always better at skating than him. A lot of the kids over there either quit skating or got hurt. Jamies parents were always there for him. And they were there when he was in trouble to tell him right from wrong. But usually it took him getting in trouble first ( Online 2 ). While Jamie was growing up his mom was always supportive of everything he did. And his dad was just supportive of school. Jamie was always in a little bit of trouble. An Analysis of the Essay of Malcolm X as a Racist

An Analysis of the Essay of Malcolm X as a Racist Malcolm was a racist, violent Black Man. He has been an anti-white all through his previous life as he had confessed, and has remained the same even after his pilgrimage to Mecca. His thoughts and emotions deny the White man, and he still sees them as hypocrites who try to benefit from the Blacks, using Negroes as tools to enrich their lives. The influence he had received during his past years from Elijah Muhammad, and his learning of the history of the White man had so much effect on him. Although he had professed to witness to have understood the real teachings of Islam, his ideas and opinions of the Whites did not change. His preaching still focused on the Black mans plight, as he had done when he served as the Minister of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm says, I didnt miss a single opportunity to tell the truth about the crimes, the evils and the indignities that are suffered by the black man in America (pg 351). He simply generalizes all Whites to be evil and tells how the White men had oppressed them. He doesnt seem to realize that Whites nowadays are different from who they were before in the past. He was telling the truth, of the cruel history of the Whites, but the truth didnt apply to all Whites as he thought. If he had witnessed the spirit of true brotherhood during his pilgrimage in Mecca, shouldnt he be more open -minded, have more sympathy and a magnanimous heart towards the White people? His speeches caused the blacks to hate the Whites and commit violent crimes against them. New York Citys press was highly upset about a recent killing in Harlem of a White woman, for which many were blaming me at least indirectly (pg 365). This shows that Malcolm was a great orator, who could unite the blacks, bur it would have been better off if he had thought more to love one another, to become one as brothers, as written in the Quran. His Blood Brothers only consisted of Negroes. If we all are, as he says, the descendants of Gods creation, why cant Whites as well be a part of his Blood Brother? Malcolm actually says that there is only a minority of brotherly white people. Yes, I have been convinced that some American whites do want to help cure the rampant racism which is now the path to destroy this country! (Pg. 365) He has no sympathy for other Whites than the White Muslims, and doesnt even try to compromise with them. As much as he defended the rights of the Blacks, and preached of the Whites historical crimes, he denied the Whites and couldnt get out of his racial prejudice. How could he actually say that there was only a minority of brotherly white people, when he, himself, didnt even bother to socialize or integrate with the Whites in America, to get to know each of them better? Muslims of white complexions were the only people whom Malcolm considered as brothers. He did not accept other Whites as his brothers; he was still a racist to them. Malcolm denies the White people, and before accepting them as human beings, he first perceives their white skin color and starts to hold a racial prejudice against them. He lies the responsibility of the Black mans sufferings on the White man unconditionally, that it is their entire fault

Dax's biography Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Dax's biography - Research Paper Example She believed that the treatments were going well even if her son did not believe these treatments to be effective (Burns, 2005). More importantly, Ada believed that God wanted her son to live and to fulfill his responsibilities to Him. And she clung to the belief that if God really wanted his son to die then he would have let him die. In the meantime, all efforts to keep him alive must be done, even if these methods were against Dax’s will and even if these methods caused him considerable pain and suffering (Burns, 2005). In understanding Ada’s position, the normative ethics is the most appropriate theory which can be used. Normative ethics â€Å"is devoted to identifying the conditions under which actions are morally right, or motives and intentions are morally good† (Shafer-Landau and Cuneo, 2007, p. 1). It is concerned with a person’s actions being morally right and good. In the case of Ada, she believed that it was morally right and proper to keep Dax alive for him to fulfill his duties to God. Normative ethics is focused on identifying the conditions where actions are deemed right, and motives are deemed wrong (Shafer-Landau and Cuneo, 2007).... The teleological theory can be used in order to justify Houston’s actions. Teleological is derived from the Greek word â€Å"telos† which means â€Å"ends† (Wittjen, 2003). This theory considers, more than anything else, the end goals of certain actions, or in some instances, the consequences of one’s actions. For Houston, his actions can be supported by this theory in the sense that his actions support the ends he wanted to achieve. He wanted to keep Dax alive because Dax would stand to gain in the end. The ends he wanted to seek, therefore justifies his actions of wanting to keep Dax alive. C. Dr. Charles Baxter Dr. Baxter believed initially that Dax’s request to die was due to his feelings of severe pain and shock. He believed that Dax lacked the mental capacity to make the right decision about his care. In considering the entire situation, Dr. Baxter believed that Dax’s actions were just related to his attempts to control his environment and therefore it was his job to provide medical care to the best of his duty (Burns, 2005). Dr. Baxter’s actions can be supported by the deontological theory. Deontology is based on the word â€Å"deonto† which means â€Å"duty† in Greek (Wittjen, 2003). This theory is based on a person’s duties and responsibilities and how people should act based on such duties and responsibilities. In this case, actions are based on these duties and these duties shall guide and designate whether or not a person is acting based on such duties (Wittjen, 2003). In the case of Dr. Baxter, his actions are based on his duties and responsibilities. His duty and responsibility is to provide medical care to Dax because he believed that Dax was not thinking logically. He felt

Integrity - Essay Example y is a concept that has an ethical angle in itself serves to indicate that it is a complex concept, which can then be defined in different terms, considering the fact that ethics has no definitive interpretation due to the subjectivity of ethical interpretations in the realms of either right or wrong. At this point it becomes inevitable to ask the question; what is integrity? The term integrity can be defined as the consistency and the commitment to honor whatever choices that an individual has made (Killinger, 2). Thus, the concept of integrity cannot be divorced from three major aspects; the consistency of principle, the soundness of mind and the commitment not to adulterate. The ethical and moral perspective views integrity from the point of the honesty of one’s actions (Killinger, 9). Honesty is the aspect of truthfulness that guides both the talk and action of an individual to ensure that both of them are consistent. It is therefore not possible to term a person as being a man of integrity, where the actions of that person are not in line with whatever the person says. Integrity demands that an individual will talk and at the same time, walk the talk (Killinger, 4). Therefore, when the ethical angle of defining integrity is taken, then it demands that no aspect of contradiction should be found within a person. In case an individual is holding conflicting beliefs within, it is only fair that the individual discards the conflicting beliefs and stands for one principle, so as to be regarded as a person of integrity. This is because; integrity and contradiction are two aspects that cannot coexist (Killinger, 8). This aspect fulfills the requirement for consistency of principle as a major element of integrity. The soundness of mind is yet another aspect that integrity must fulfill. The soundness of mind simply means that an individual makes a choice that is well informed, well thought-out and fully considered, so that the individual can be able to stand by that

Death Penalty Essay -- essays research papers

Death Penalty; For or Opposed Capital punishment is the execution of a perpetrator for committing a heinous crime (homicide), and it is a hotly debated topic in our society. It has always been a belief for some that if another person wrongs them, they should have the right to take revenge against that person. In the present day, this view still remains, but has been toned down by laws that state the rights of the accused and have developed punishments for offenders. Many, me included, still believe that those punishments are not harsh enough and allow criminals to take advantage of them, knowing that if caught, the punishment is not near enough to make it wise to simply avoid the risk. I believe that capital punishment is an effective way of dealing with people who have committed heinous crimes. For example, there is a middle-aged man. This man rapes and kills a little girl and is given life in prison. Unfortunately, after a mere 30 years in prison he is up for parole and receives it. After being back on the stre ets he commits and is convicted of another murder. Did that second person really need to die? Could it have been prevented? Absolutely. That second victim would still be enjoying holidays with their family and vacations with their friends. That’s why we have the death penalty. The Death Penalty is nothing new to our society. It has been in effect throughout the world for ages. As far back as the Eighteenth Century, B.C., a king of Babylon codified 25 crimes that were punishable by the death penalty. {In the Draconian code of Athens, it was the only punishment for all crimes.} This debate is especially strong within the Christian religion, due to the fact that Jesus himself was sentenced to the death penalty. Skipping ahead to more modern times, the death penalty in America was influenced more by Great Britain than any other country. The first record of execution in America is that of Captain George Kendall in Jamestown, Virginia. He was accused of espionage for Spain. A few years later, Virginia governor Sir Thomas Dale enacted the Divine, Moral and Marital Laws that provided for the death penalty in even the most minor offenses. Along with the enactment of capital punishment came the abolitionist movement, which still exists today. One of the major activists was Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder of the Pen... ...ently sentenced Horton to two consecutive life terms refused to extradite him to Massachusetts. "I'm not prepared to take the chance that Mr. Horton might again be furloughed . . . This man should never draw a breath of free air again," said the judge. The scandal heated to a rolling boil. In April of 1988, embattled Massachusetts legislators finally killed the 16-year-old program -- without further resistance from Dukakis. Thank God! This is why for people who truly value public safety, there is no substitute for the best in its defense which is capital punishment. It not only forever bars the murderer from killing again, it also prevents parole boards and criminal rights activists from giving him the chance to repeat his crime. (Lowe) As you can clearly see this information is clear and convincing evidence of why the death penalty should be in affect. Something else that was mentioned; parole, yes people can get out on a parole and commit murder. Our parole system definitely needs to be retooled. This is another cause of crime. 85% of offenders go back into the system. What does that say about justice? Can we honestly say we are cutting the crime rate down? I ask you?

Biblical Similarities in Hawthorne’s “Rappaccini’s Daughter” Essay

Biblical Similarities in Hawthorne’s â€Å"Rappaccini’s DaughterIn Nathanial Hawthorne’s â€Å"Rappaccini’s Daughter,† many biblical parallels can be found. This short story duplicates the first three chapters of Genesis in the Bible. The similarities range from the characters, to the setting, and even to the deadly plant in the story. The account of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapters 1-3 is extremely similar to the situation of Giovanni and Beatrice in â€Å"Rappaccini’s Daughter†. In both â€Å"Rappaccini’s Daughter† and the Genesis chapters in the Bible, lush, beautiful gardens are the setting. Both gardens are exotic and pretty, but the Garden of Eden is bright and tropical, whereas Dr. Rappaccini’s garden is dark and mysterious. Both gardens are home to a type of â€Å"forbidden† plant, but the Garden of Eden was created by God, whereas the garden in the story is created by a man with a god complex, Dr. Rappaccini. The forbidden plant in Genesis is a gorgeous fruit tree. The tree in the Garden of Eden is called the Tree of Knowledge and was extremely tempting to Adam and Eve. However, the tree was deemed prohibited by God. The plant in Rappaccini’s garden is a large flowering bush. The flowers on this bush are unlike any others and are extremely exquisite. The two plants share the trait of â€Å"forbidden,† but in different ways. The fruit on the tree in Genesis was forbidden because God said so. The plant in Rappaccini’s garden was forbidden because it was poisonous. The only person immune to the poison of this plant was Beatrice, then soon Giovanni. In Hawthorne’s story, a parallel between Giovanni and Adam is established. Both are young men, and each were tempted by a beautiful young woman. Giovanni in Hawthorne’s story was lured into the garden by Beatrice’s beauty. Adam was lured by Eve’s beauty to betray God. Beatrice and Eve also share similarities. They both are beautiful and young and are naà ¯ve to the evils of the world they live in. The serpent in â€Å"Rappaccini’s Daughter† is clearly represented by Dr. Rappaccini and Professor Pietro Baglioni. Dr. Rappaccini is responsible for luring Giovanni into the garden for his daughter, and also for exposing him to the toxin that led to him becoming like Beatrice, poisonous and stuck in the garden. Professor Pietro Baglioni is responsible for giving Giovanni the silver vial with the supposed antidote for the poisons. When Giovanni gives Beatrice the vial she then dies because the poison is too entwined with her body. Sadly, she was not given a second chance like Adam and Eve. The story of â€Å"Rappaccini’s Daughter† is an extremely enjoyable story with close biblical ties. The parallels are extremely apparent and also very important. What seems to be a story simply of fatal love is quite possibly a retelling of the opening chapter of Genesis in the Bible.
